Thank you
We are amazed!
So many of you sent us your street name suggestions. Your explanations entertained us. And your motivations moved us deeply.
In the category “good life” - the most richly represented category - we found that you dream of a better world based on respect, dialogue, peace and diversity. You find in Brussels a hope of reward for your courage and for that of your parents. You appreciate good humour and the Zwans. But no, let us not forget our Brussels of old...
The castards juggling with their goods, the ketjes who always played in their strotje, the national drasch and the skieve architek. Jef Kazak and Raymond Goethals, allée fieu!
But through all this, you have shown that you are eternal lovers with profound memories of beautiful moments spent in Tour & Taxis a long time ago - at Couleur Café with your honey or more recently, in the park with your ‘chou’ from Brussels.
The surrealists had their suggestions: the rue straat (street street) and the rue barbe (beard street) and why not, the rue sans nom, peut-être (street without name, perhaps).
The gueuze, the croquettes crevettes and the américain préparé also tried their luck.
You also suggested the names of your favourite artists who have recently left us: Mauranne, Johnny, David Bowie, George Michael, Cesaria Evora. And Gainsbourg again with ‘Couleur Café’. From Extravaganza to Magasin 4, from raï to salsa to Rastafari entertainment, you really enjoyed the music and the parties of the Tour & Taxis.
The rich history of the area has inspired your frequent suggestions of the names of illustrious members of the von Thurn und Taxis family, creators of the post office, entrepreneurs and Europeans. Buildings, materials and functions were all inspirations for a series of suggestions. The Roman artefacts found during the construction of the new buildings recall our history of the brave Gauls.
Even if your heroes are still alive (and therefore excluded from the competition) you did not hesitate to suggest them anyway, not mentioning any names...Annie Cordy! There were many proposals for the names of outstanding women to readdress the underrepresentation in the public domain. The victims of violence such as the attacks of 22 March 2016, Ihsane Jarfi and Jo Cox were in your hearts. Many simply wanted to honour the heroes that were their dads.
We asked for poetry and we got it! What do you think of the avenue des voleurs du feu (fire-thieves' avenue), the rue du vent doux (soft winds street) or the rue des bonheur des anges (delight of angels street)? You can imagine the impasse des brumes (cul-de-sac of mists) next to the ferry terminal, as is the rue du temps figé (frozen time street).
